Prayer Approaches
There are several approaches to quieting the mind and entering into prayer that have been passed down through the ages. If you have trouble entering into the presence of God, try one of these techniques.
Keep a Notepad
If your "to do" list keeps popping into your head when you try to pray, keep a notepad beside you and jot down what you need to do. Having made a note of it often removes it from your mind and let's you get on with prayer.
Choose a Centering Word or Phrase
If your mind wanders, choosing a word or phrase to bring you back to prayer can be helpful. Some people simply use the name "Jesus" or a short phrase such as "Lord, have mercy." Repeat the word or phrase until you have focused again.
Breathe Out Your Distractions
If you are bothered by worry or anxiety and want to calm yourself for prayer, try praying along with your breathing. Breathe out anxiety; breathe in Jesus. Breathe out worry; breathe in Jesus. Breathe out anger; breathe in Jesus. Breathe out distress; breathe in Jesus. Breathe out (whatever you need to get ride of); breathe in Jesus. Do this until you are settled.
