Written Prayers
Many people don't seem to believe in written prayers, preferring to pray solely "from the heart." I believe there is room for both and it never hurts to have another weapon in our prayer arsenal. There are plenty of examples of written prayers in the Scriptures; the primary example is Psalms. These are the written prayers, the prayer journal if you will, of King David. Why are they included in the Bible if they are not helpful to us in living the Christian life. Another example is the Lord's Prayer. If not recorded for us, we would not have this prayer today. Do not all Christians have it memorized so that it can be prayed at a moment's notice.
There are many other prayers recorded in the various books of the Bible, plus there are records of the prayers prayed by the holy men and women who have preceded us. When we are in our toughest moments, when words escape us and doubt creeps in, we can turn to written prayers for comfort and solace, for faith and encouragement.
I encourage you to pray the Psalms, the Lord's Prayer, and other written prayers aloud whenever you are in a time of need.
